December 2008

December 16th, 2008

Geometry:

We have been discussing Chapter 5; perpendicular bisectors, angle bisectors, medians and altitudes. This chapter has several new vocabulary words and the pictures are getting tougher to analyze. The major opportunity is before christmas break! So far 15 people have signed up to take it verbally!

Algebra II:

We are diving into the deep end of the pool and we will see who knows how to swim! Chapter 5 is all about quadratic functions; graphing parabolas and solving equations with real numbers and complex(imaginary) numbers. This is the part where it gets really tough for Algebra II students and is the breaking point for many. Please stay focused and get help if you need it!

Algebra IB

We are continuing in Chapters 9 and 12 on square roots. We are working on the Pythagorean Theorem and its applications as well as the big Quadratic Formula. These problems are multi-step and can be frustrating when you make one little error and the problem turns out incorrect. Stay with it and keep working hard! The last mini opportunity is before christmas break.

Week of Nov 24-26

December 16th, 2008

Sorry I was out of commission most of this week with the flu. I was gone Mon and Tues but here on Wed before Thanksgiving.

Geometry:

We turned in P.258 #2-36even on Monday and that was all for the short week. The Chapter 4 Major Opportunity was a big success with several students scoring 100%. Keep in mind, all these problems will turn up again on your semester exam in January.

Algebra II:

We turned in P.260 #24-64 on Tuesday when I was gone. We have been working on Factoring Quadratic Equations.

Algebra IB:

We turned in 2 assignments this week, P.508 10-48even and wksht 9.2A. Make sure all homework gets finished and turned in on time! Some of us are starting to slack on the completion of the homework.

Week of Nov 11-14

November 14th, 2008

Geometry

This week we discussed how to prove two triangles congruent and wrote several proofs applying the methods of SSS, SAS, AAS, ASA. We also took a mini opportunity over this and all three classes wrote some beautiful proofs! Way to go everyone! Next Friday, 11/21, we will have our Major Opportunity on Chapter 4.

Algebra II

This week we finished working with matrices in Chapter 4. The Major Opportunity went extremely well with most of the class getting A’s and B’s and really showing their ability on utilizing the graphing calculator with matrices to check their work. Friday of this week we started the biggest concept of the year which is Chapter 5 Quadratics. I hope everyone will now know quadratics are pictures of curves or parabolas, not lines.

Algebra IB

We continued simplifying square roots this week. Friday we had a mini opportunity to show our progress on that. Some people are more than ready to move on with square roots where as some of the class is struggling with knowing when to write a square root sign and when the answer is simply a whole number. We will continue to work on this in our discussions of square roots the rest of the semester.

Week of Nov 3-6

November 3rd, 2008

Geometry

This week we are diving into the world of triangles to figure out how one triangle is congruent to another. Next week is a mini opportunity on triangles.

Algebra II

This week we are multiplying matrices and using a graphing calculator to do application problems involving matrices. Next week will be the major opportunity on Chapter 4.

Algebra IB

We are ending Chapter 8 on Exponents and then will be starting Chapter 9 on Radicals.

Week of Oct 27-31

October 30th, 2008

Geometry:

This week was the beginning of the 2nd Quarter and we finished Chapter 3 on Parallel and Perpendicular lines.  We are now starting Chapter 4 on Triangles.  We should be finished with Chapter 5 by the end of the semester.

Algebra II:

This week we finished Chapter 3 on Solving Systems of Equations in both two and three variables.  Students learned how to utilize their graphing calculators to solve application problems like choosing a cell phone plan or planning the school’s homecoming dance.  We are beginning Chapter 4 on Matrices.

Algebra IB:

This week we are continuing in Chapter 8 on Exponents and learning how to graph exponential functions.  We will end the week by talking about interest earned from an investment and also the depreciation of car value.
