DEPARTMENT CHAIR MEETING MINUTES

September 3, 2009

Conference Room

7:15 to 7:45 AM

Present:

S. Mattie, C. McGough, L. Carey, J. Zum Mallen, D. Aper, J. Fiers, M. Haugse, S. Eberhardt, L. VanDerLeest, S. Scherer, A. Ringenberg, T. Minnaert, J. DePauw

Agenda Topic:  Supply lists – I would like staff to post on their syllabi a supply list so that parents can shop for their HS kids at the same times as their other kids.

Discussion:  Along with the syllabus, post this information on your blogs.  This information needs to be advertised better.  Staff needs to be careful in assigning points for grades for such things as book covers, supplies, and other non-academic items.  For next semester, and the future, this practice should not happen.

Agenda Topic:  SSR – Make sure everyone communicates their procedures and expectations clearly, and enforces them.  Staff should be good models with their reading.  A read-a-loud, on occasion, would be appropriate, if willing.

Discussion:  Administration should be emailed by any staff member who chooses to read at the beginning of seventh hour, instead of the end.

Agenda Topic:  Open house review – With the tremendous turnout and feedback, I would like to plan on the same corresponding night next year.

Discussion:  Most liked open house on this date.  Dave brought up a point, that we saw more freshmen, but he thought we saw fewer upper class students.

Agenda Topic:  Review of procedural items with staff – all taken care of?

Discussion:  All procedures, especially emergency procedures should be reviewed with each period.

Agenda Topic:  Area Career Center calendars

Discussion:  Linda VanDerLeest gave out the calendars.  They are from the Area Career Center and correlate with a set of binders we have with corresponding lessons.  Staff can borrow the binders from Linda, Joe, or anyone else who has a set.  It was noted that January 28, 2010 was listed on the calendars as “Fun At Work Day.”

Agenda Topic:  H1N1 – Julie has cans of Lysol for those who want one.  Take for your department.

Discussion:  If we run out, tell Julie so she can order more.  Encourage your students to wash their hands frequently.  It was brought up that the desks are used all day, and are dirty.  Teri indicated that her department might have some students who could clean desks.  She would talk to LaJean and get information back to the group.

Agenda Topic:  Department minutes – send to all administrators, not just Mrs. Swanson and MJH.

Discussion  Send to Joni, Mike, Joe, Chad, and Travis.

Agenda Topic:  Friday – pep assembly advisory schedule.

Discussion:  We will follow Link Crew Advisory schedule.  Mike will stay in the cafeteria with those students who do not wish to go to the assembly.

Agenda Topic:  Weather alerts

Discussion:  Linda passed out a new city policy on bad weather alerts.  This should be shared with department members, and then students.

Other topics of discussion

We have data on PLAN Test item analysis.  Staff will receive that information, soon.  Can spend some time on September 29, 2009.

GEEE grants should go to Mr. Kuffel, soon.

There is SMART Board training at the ROE.

There will be a meeting Friday, in the morning, with staff who have been Learning Points Training.

All teachers should make sure that they have significant, meaningful grades posted as soon as possible.

Steve asked about students being allowed to make copies in the work room.  No students are to be allowed in the work room, at any time.

Julie asked about the progress report being used with the targeted students.  Mike explained how each administrator has about sixteen students we are working with this year.  He will provide lists of the students to the staff.
