Geneseo Middle/High School PTA General Meeting Minutes

The general meeting of the MS/HS PTA was called to order at 6:10 p.m. with ten people in attendance.

Secretary and Treasurer Reports:

The secretary’s report was read and Deb Casteel made a motion to approve and Leann McDonald seconded.  The minutes were approved.

Thank you notes were passed around for people to read.

The treasurer’s report stated the balance on hand as1453.33 as of December 1, 2009 and the ending balance was 3527.95 as of February 9, 2010.  The report will be filed for audit.

A correction to the budget is that the Weekly Reader was last paid in May 2008.  Weekly Reader needs to be paid for the 2009-2010 school year. A motion to pay this bill was made by Leann McDonald and seconded by Mary Beth Peterson.  A note will be sent to Karna Frerichs and John Murray that they will need to apply for grants for the 2010-2011 school year.  Please see the attached amended budget for 2009-2010.

Committee Reports:

Membership: Lorrie Snodgrass reported that the District 35 annual meeting will be on March 3, 2010 at Church of Christ in East Moline.  A gift basket needs to be furnished for this event.  The state PTA convention will be March 12 to March 14.  If you wish to attend, please call Lorrie.  Changes per Lorrie Snodgrass as of February 23, 2010—Unforeseen circumstances have caused the meeting to be postponed.  It is tentatively set for Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Christ the King Church in Moline.  Please call her for exact date, time, and location.

Pictures: No Report.

Hospitality: March 12 will be a teacher’s luncheon at the high school.  Kris Minneart will call people to bring dessert items.  Parents will need to bring desserts before 11:00 on March 12 to the main entrance of the high school.  Julie Stradt will have a cart at the main entrance for parents to put their desserts on.

Bulletin Board: Still checking with Karen Atwell on doing the middle school board.

Reflections: Joni Beck reported that February 3, 2010 at Geneseo High School was the Reflections program.  The program had a good turn out.  Thank you to all of the parents that donated cookies.

Ways and Means: Lorrie Snodgrass reported that they would have about $15,000 to divide up between the middle school and the high school for grants.  Profits were down because Geneseo did not host the Moline game and the homecoming game was cancelled. Parents thought that sales were down because kids could not walk around and go to the concession stands anytime they wanted.  Lorrie Snodgrass and Jill DePauw will look for a date to select the recipients of the grant requests.  They will notify those who may be interested in attending or anyone can contact them if they want to come. It was stated again that ALL GRANT APPLICANTS MUST BE PTA MEMBERS. Please see the attached copy of the itemize expenses and profits.

Life Membership: March 5, 2010 is the deadline for Life Member banquet reservations.  Please send $10.00 to Joni Beck if you wish to attend the dinner.  PTA will pay $50 to the Geneseo Middle School Jazz Band for performing at the banquet.   It was decided that all ten cookers and cotton candy lady will be honored with a T.H.A.N.K.S. (To Honor And Notice Kindness & Service)  certificate at the banquet and Deb Casteel will be honored with a Life Member award.   PTA will pay for the honorees and a guest to attend the banquet.  Martha Fleming will send invitations to the honorees.

Scholarships: Janet Larson reported that she will send information out for students to apply.

Principal’s Time: Mr. DeBaene attended the meeting and thanked the PTA for all of their hard work.  He stated that middle school will host a student handbook review on February 25, 2010 at 6:00.  Please call him or email him if you would like to attend.  The school district wants to make the handbook more parent and student friendly are inviting parents to help with this project.  Mr. DeBane also commented on the great success of the Smartboards program.  Please let him know if you have any ideas for future programs.  On the Same Page, book club program was also a great success.  Mr. Hofer will host the “Meet the Author” night on March 18, 2010.  Everyone is encouraged to attend.  Cookies and juice will be provided.  He also commented on the student’s zones and the amount of time that kids are allowed to go to the concession stand at the football games.  Mr. DeBane stated that the high school sets the rules and he would pass our concerns on to the high school staff.  Please email or call Mr. DeBane on future program ideas for meetings.  He also stated that it would be good to have a PTA sign-up the same night as the incoming 6th grade night.  Meeting was set for April 15, 2010.

Old Business:

Winner of the US Cellular program has not been announced yet.

Lorrie Snodgrass reported that the PTA Officers/Superintendent meeting went well.  It is proposed that on-line Registration will start on May 1, 2010 and will be pretty well finished by August 1, 2010.  The school district might provide an early bird special if you register by a certain date.  The next PTA Officers/Superintendent meeting will be April 21,2010, 9:00 a.m. at Happy Joe’s.  At least two representatives from each building should attend. The 2010-2011 school year will start on August 16, 2010.  You may go on the school website to view the new calendar.

New Business:

Corie Medley announced that she will be stepping down from president this year.  A nominating committee was formed to start looking for new officers and committee chairs for 2010-2011.   Tia Heppner, Leann McDonald and Jacque Freebern will be on the nominating committee.

PLEASE VOTE!
It’s called “Calling All Communities” and is sponsored by US Cellular.
All you have to do is be 18 or older to log on to the following site
after you get a “Calling All Communities”
card from one of their stores.  The top 10 vote-getting schools in the
nation each get $100,000!
Just stop by Durick’s Radio Shack or any U.S. Cellular store, pick up a card with
the directions on the back, and go to this site:

http://www.uscc.com/uscellular/SilverStream/Pages/x_page.html?p=callingallcommunities

Just click on the link “Vote for Your School” and follow the directions.

If enough people do this, our school could be one of ten in the nation who wins $100,000!

There’s a code on each card, and they keep track by having you enter your name,
address, and a cell phone #, and again, you must be 18.

All of our Geneseo schools are listed on the site, so we’d need to focus
on just the MS, knowing that if we won, the money could be split between both the HS and MS.

Currently, the leading school in the contest has less than 300 votes.
We can do this!

MS/HS PTA will be publicizing this in the Republic soon.

Remember:  Vote for Geneseo Middle School!
The deadline is January 15, 2010.

A laptop was given to PTA to use by the district.  Any takers??
