Reading Improvement is so vital because it is money going directly to help the young students that need extra help. My oldest son received help for about 4 months that got him on track - and now he is a senior in college. Now, due to legislative incompetence, there will be more youngsters not receiving that vital help - and then the legislators will cry out for more educational transparency, of course!

It is too bad that we don't have the courage in this state to pass a graduated income tax. Why are property taxes so high? Because the state is not returning tax moneys back to schools and municipalities, guess where that has to come from? But I digress...

Makes sense to do a full day on Friday, the 4th, however, I'm sure the state will only count this as 1 day as opposed to 2 days. It looks like we will have to have at least 1/2 day attendance on Monday, the 7th. My concern is the 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip. The kids leave on Saturday, the 5th. They will be excused for this field trip, correct?

It is not likely that we will attend school on Memorial Day. It appears that we will be attending school on June 7th for at least half a day of student attendance.

On the 09 - 10 days off list from the schools website the last day is June 8th and that is a half day. Is this going to change?

Why don't we just cancel memorial day. And send the kids to school anyway. Or maybe extend the day of school on the 4th. I am sure someone can figure something gout so that the last day can remain the same.

District 228 would not adopt the Common Core Standards before they were adopted at the State Board of Education level, and even then, it may be that only some of those standards would become part of the District's curriculum. You may be interested to know that the District Curriculum/Policy Committee has been examining the current grading scale. While we do hear in some instances where the current grading scale has had adverse impact on some of our graduates, we do not have the same perspective that you stated that "admission and scholarship decisions (are made) solely on the basis of GPA and ACT scores". You could certainly contact Dr. Joni Swanson if you would like to provide further input into the grading discussion. Thanks for commenting!
