A long story short, the dishwasher stopped working once again. The buttons on the touch panel stopped working and thus the dishwasher would not start. After taking the machine apart again I saw something different. The circuit board looked to be in tip top shape (replaced earlier for 60$) but after taking off the front control panel I found a new problem.
Where the ribbon cable connects the front control panel to the circuit board you could clearly see burn marks on the wire. I was also able to press out a brownish liquid through the opening which confirmed earlier thoughts that the machine has a design flow which allows water to invade the electronics. From the photo of the back side of the front panel you can see clear burn marks on the cable. Looks like both the control circuit board and front panel short out on this model simply because of water damage, I suspect that during the drying cycle steam works it way up through the seam and into the electronics area. I am thinking about putting a line of silicon around the seams on the front assembly door and near the ribbon cable to the front control panel.
If you happen to have this model and are looking for parts I would recommend heading to the sears part website – searspartsdirect . Here the front control panel was 68$ compared to other online vendors which averaged around 170$ all the way to 220$. (partsselect.com, applicancepartspros.com all had this part way overpriced.)

Thanks for this post, It is just the same problem Im havine with my maytag 300. I need to Know how to take the front apart to replace parts.

I can’t find the model number on my dish washer. it looks the same as yours, quiet series 300. the ribbon from the front panel has some burn marks on it. I’m hoping it was just defective or something, and not an underlying problem with the computer that caused it to burn. my problem is I want to buy a black panel so I can paint the rest, but I can’t find it on the sears website without the model number.
Maytag Bravos washing machine-delivered Dec. 18th, 2010.
I’ve done 2 loads of laundry and it hasn’t worked since. “LF” on
display and it won’t finish washing. A&E Factory Services
was scheduled twice for repair and THEY cancelled both times, said
they didn’t have a technician avialable. What a way to run a
business. I want my Kenmore back!!!
I’m having trouble with my dishes getting clean and the machine not draining completely at the end of the cycle.
Any thoughts?
This dishwasher has been recalled posing fire hazard for this reason. FYI google it.
I have a maytag quiet series 300 they say its not on the recall list I checked. I ran a load 2 days ago and went to start it again and only some of the lights work on the panel the normal wash light, start/cancel. delay sanitize lights are all out the lights for the heavy wash light wash and the 4 hour delay are out the rest of the lights work but still does no good wont start. any help would be appreciated
Thanks for this post. My Maytag Quietseries 300 also had a control panel that stopped working consistently. I replaced the control board, and got exactly the same behavior: some lights would work, but some wouldn’t. After reading your post I took the dishwasher apart again and found EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM. There is corrosion where the flex circuit meets the touch panel. I like your silicone idea.
Same problem. Lights sometimes worked, finally they stopped all together. I pulled the front case off and tried reseating the ribbon cable. When I pulled it out from under the black box, I noticed some discoloration. I took the black box off and found severe corrosion along the ribbon. It appears that they did not fully coat the back of the cable to seal it from the steam and it corrodes the metal away. That explains the seemingly random behavior during the slow failure process.
I just posted on the control board blog but I find now that there are definite burn/corrosion marks on the ribbon cable.
Thanks for the info about what to look for.
Thanks for posting this. We have had the same problem with the electronic control panel working inconsistently; I will pass this info on to my husband. To Julie, we are also experiencing dishes not getting rinsed properly and thus not getting clean. Has anyone found a solution to this?
Ditto; except I just paid $380+ for labor and a new panel on Friday and the damn thing isn’t working today (Monday).
I am waiting on the store from whom I purchased it to
get purchase date etc. (several years ago) so I can approach Maytag.
Obviously this is a significant design defect: the electronic panel defects
Same problem with our QuietSeries 300 dishwasher. What are the part numbers for the control panel and the ribbon cable?
Is it worth fixing? How do we get Maytag to make good on their mistakes and do a recall?
Is a class action lawsuit the only means of getting Maytag to do the right thing?
Same here –
QuietSeries 300 Machine (black finish) is about 3 or 4 years old and the “touch pad” stopped working when you try to push the buttons….some of the lights light, others do not, either way it will not start.
I agree there must be some design flaw ! What we need is a lawyer to have this problem and be reading this board.
We did get the recall re the heating element and did have that serviced, but since this problem will probably not cause a fire that create major lawsuits, I think they do not care about standing behind their product.
I know this, I am staying away from Maytag and its subsidies from now on and will tell others to do the same!
We had an Insinkerator brand that went for 20 years – only problem was wear and tear to the top rack. Sadly we replaced it with this.
You are 100% correct, the Quiet Series 300 by Maytag I have did the same thing. It quit working due to the electronics. I checked to see about getting it fixed and was quoted several prices of around $250. Now that I know it will just go out again I think I will just buy another dishwasher and this time I will not buy a Maytag or Whirlpool since they are the same machines.
Same problem with control panel. Regarding problems with dishes not getting clean, water not draining – I was using gel packs and the serviceman discovered the packs were not dissolving and they were gunking up the parts. Worked great after he pulled them out. Now the control panel is shot!
contacted Maytag and they sent someone over to replace the recalled part (heating element) on the Maytag Quiet series300. But I am having ur same issue. Lights sometimes work and now not at all. Is the control panel something we can install ourselves, or you must have appliance repair experience?
Smae issue with the control panel here ….. 4 year old dishwasher and issues with the buttons, some light-up, some don’t … either way it won’t start. I also had the issue with the lack of draining and subsequently the lack on cleanliness on the dishes. The root cause of this was the food stuff that was not properly rinsed off prior to putting the dishes in the dishwasher. These particles get caught in the lower unit and block the water from properly draining. It is for this reason that the dishes get rinsed with the original wash water. To resolve this, you have to remove every impliment from the bottom of the washer and scrape the “gunk” out of every area …. this is a nasty process !
Never will I purchase a Maytag dishwasher …. I have heard good things about the Bosh and LG.
Good luck to those that own this machine.
hi ,
same problem with control pannel some lights on —no start .
Were is the switch that controls the opening and closing of the door located ?
how do you get to it ?
like to look that over while i trouble shoot the—no start problem
regards tony
My dishes are not getting clean and the machine is not draining at the end of the program.
What can I do?
Add me to the chorus…
Quiet Series 300
Some lights and doesn’t start
Dish Washer is 4 years old
Ditto on the control panel not working. Replaced it twice, 1st time under warranty. The repairman was here twice. Maytag didn’t want him to replace the panel the first time. Was expensive part. He told them 2nd time that it had to be replaced. Then we bought one ourselves. Still “has a mind of it’s own” Moisture getting into the ribbon cable sounds plausible. Cannot find the model #. I think it fell off. How do I order a part without it? NO MORE MAYTAGS FOR ME
Some are recalled. Check here:

Mine’s a part of this – whew! Quiet Series 300, black.
Just confirming and sympathizing. Problem with lights and control panel on a black Quiet Series 300, five years old. Just replaced the control board and it did not solve the problem. I did notice corrosion on the cable to the control panel. Seems to be a terrible dishwasher overall.
Me too. I am unable to start my dishwasher…the control panel lights seem to have a mind of their own…either all lite, at times blinking, other times no lights. I tried unplugging the electrical cord &/or circuit breaker to “reset” the machine to no avail.
Ffour year old 300 series; terrible DW. start button fails to start, racks for dishes are the worst I have ever seen.
Looks like I will replace this and will avoid any Matag products in the future. They are not what they used to be. Now they are J–k.
Our maytag quiet 200 control panel is dead. Only 2 years old. pathetic disposable junk.
Elizabeth I replaced my control head (2 years old was $335 maytag repair man). worked for one year. just broke again last night. It was acting intermittent. Found the ribbon cable that plugs into the circuit board to be coated with some gummy junk. I could not clean it easily..so I lightly sanded the ribbon cable end until all the conductors were shiny…then cut about 1/2 inch off the end of the ribbon and reconnected. that fixed it. Also I kept the old control head…it also wasnt broken…only the cable was junked up just like the one year old replacement. Its not a complicated repair get a volunteer. takes about 10 minutes or get another morgage and by a another dishwasher lol marty
I also have this problem with control board ribbion cable corrosion pluss a bad door seal .
looks like I’ll have to buy a new one now
Same problem. Have already replaced once. Contacting Maytag-Whirlpool – apparently they are dealing with this issue on a case by case basis. If they don’t come through buying a different dishwasher – had enough with issues with this on.
I have a Quiet Series 300 that I purch in 2004 and although I had a few issues, it has been good to me and perhaps my experiences may help. Some of the repairs are due to my own ignorance and I’ve learned a few things.
First off, like many of you, I had a bad control panel that was immediately replaced next day under warranty. They even gave me a used control head to get me running and then came back the next week and installed a brand new one (even though there was likely no difference).
I have broken the handle twice now. Once it was replaced under warranty and once I did it myself. it takes 10min max and is easy to do. If you have kids or family that close the door without holding the handle up, you will eventually break this also.
LOUD noises!!! Easy fix for me anyway… Pulled the cover and float plate to expose glass hitting the chopper blade…. removed debris… no issues…
The last issue I just resolved was the ‘crud everywhere after cleaning’ issue many have. I replaced the float plate as there was an opening at the edge (look closely as mine wasn’t a tear but just old adhesive that let go so it looks intact till you take a really good look).
Lastly… when I replaced the filter float plate, I must have grazed/leaned on the fill/float switch sooooo when it hit the rinse cycle, it leaked from both front corners… After scratching my head for a long time and pulling the front liner to check things out, I pulled the service plate and took a very good look around…
The float switch itself is actuated with a small spring that sits on a little brass plate… When I pushed down on the float from the top, it must have sent the brass plate and spring flying. To avoid this from taking place again I put a drop of Krazy Glue on the spring where it sits on the plate and then a drop on the back. I carefully inserted it under the brass arm of the switch effectively gluing it in place.
One more cheap repair was a small leak on the front left. I removed the bottom few inches of the door gasket and put it behind the bottom of the existing gasket which pushes the gasket forward and created a perfect seal. Cost = $0. Time for repair = 1min.
Good luck!

another thing learned is that the tor-x screws almost all sit in plastic and don’t like much torque at all. I found that the ’5′ setting on my drill was nearly perfect. Yes I tried 6 and 4. 7 stripped it, 4 was too light. Perhaps I am a little anal with these things….

similar issues here….. quiet 300… phantom problems with lights and buttons then the center motor stopped working. Just found a puddle of water under the unit that seems to have come from the center motor seal… not happy with this 4 yr old machine….
Hi All,
I’m on my second control panel. Cleaning with alcohol will work or acetal, however the acetal will eat away the adhesive of the strain relief (the clear covering they put on the flex cable were they expect the flex to bend) where the corrosion forms.
The flex traces are very thin, they will not take much cleaning, be gentle and expect that it will only work a few times, if you are lucky.
I’m a mechanical engineer, this is simply poor designing, the flex traces are exposed to a high humidity atmosphere, everytime you use the dishwasher.
Sorry for the soap box, but I have had it with these touch pad control panels. Every appliance I have with these membrane control panels have cracked or stopped working. Will someone please take a hint and stop using them, they are shit. Honestly, buying an older appliance with mechanical buttons is a far better bet.
Back in the day, you could count on some makers to be reliable, now they are all made in the same place, and all use the same cheap chinese components. This problem will not go away until we put integrity back in to building decent products.
Good luck everyone.
