Introduction to festivals in Bhutan

Festivals in Bhutan can be divided into traditional festivals, non-religious festivals, and religious festivals. Most festivals are celebrated according to the Bhutanese calendar. The most important of these is Tshechu, an annual religious festival in Bhutan that is held in every district or dzongkhag of Bhutan on the 10th day of each month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. The month depends on location. Thecus is a religious festival of the Drupa lineage of the Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism.

Tshechus are large social gatherings that function as social connections between people in remote and scattered villages. Large markets also gather at the site of the fair, leading to a thriving business. Thimphu and Parotschu are among the largest in terms of participation and audience size.

During the festival, tourists are not allowed to smoke. You'd better be more polite and don't speak loudly or take pictures.

Bhutan Calendar

The Bhutanese calendar is a variation of the Tibetan calendar. It's much like the Phugpa system but has different values for some of the main variables -- for example, the mean longitude of the sun at any time. The average motions of the sun, moon, and planets are exactly the same as those used in the Phugpa and Tsurphu systems. However, the Bhutanese calendar has a very strange and unique feature - the working day is one day earlier than the main Tibetan calendar and also one day earlier than the Western calendar.
