New silicon-based nanomaterials with ideal Biophotonic properties have great potential in clinical nanomedicine. Silicon is a kind of cubic non van der Waals (non VDW) material which is difficult to obtain two-dimensional lamellar structure directly. However the {111} plane of silicon has lower cleavage energy than the {100} {110} planes. Therefore two-dimensional silicon nanosheets (Si NSS) can be synthesized by cleavage of crystalline silicon with fully exposed {111} planes.

the team of Wang Jiahong Yu Xuefeng of Shenzhen Institute of advanced technology Chinese Academy of Sciences developed a novel top-down technology to obtain silicon nanosheets explored the possibility of its application in biophotonics. Firstly octahedral silicon crystals with fully exposed {111} planes were prepared by chemical vapor transport method assisted by sulfur iodine. Then the liquid phase of the crystal was stripped into nanosheets by ultrasonic cavitation. The prepared 2D sinss have good biocompatibility have unique Raman scattering signal response under the excitation of nir-i (785 nm) laser which is easy to distinguish from proteins other organic compounds; it is expected to realize intracellular biophoton imaging without external markers signal enhancers. In addition the extinction coefficient of 2D sinss in nir-ii (1064 nm) is 11.3 LG – 1cm – 1 the photothermal conversion efficiency is 21.4%. 2D sinss can effectively kill tumor cells can be used in nir-ii photothermal cancer therapy.

the strategy of plane selective cleavage proposed in this study can provide reference for the preparation of two-dimensional nanostructures of non van der Waals materials. Two dimensional silicon-based nanomaterials with good biocompatibility excellent near-infrared Biophotonic properties may also be used in clinical diagnosis treatment in the future.
